Socratic Ideas

Socrates was a classical Greek philosopher & is also depicted as the father of western philosophy. In reality, he left none of his teachings in writing and whatever we have is just the writings of his students like Plato, etc. on his behalf. His quotes and teachings have survived since antiquity and below I share with you some of his quotes with a little commentary. His quotes are highly thought-provoking and worth remembering, So tie your seat belts please, here we go...

Very true indeed. It says right wisdom comes when you know yourself. When you even don't know yourself properly then how can you know anything else, any inquiry of the object can only be made if the subject is truly aware and alert & when he is confused then how you may think of him to get the right knowledge of the outside. Mastery comes when you are more into your inside than the outside. Even if you take million more births and come again to investigate and understand the outside world, you won't get a thing out of it, as it's so vast with all its intricacies that you would be able to understand the whole outside completely. To know an object first requirement is that the subject should know of himself first, then only he can move forward with the inquiry.

Knowing own self is the true wisdom all else is just an illusion alone. This inquisitive mind comes when you observe clearly and with a clear mind, then only you can say to you that there is much more to know and be aware of than to indulge in worthless & usual normal thinking and pursuits. Then only we won't be blinded by the sensuous pleasures and it will be fully clear that it's nothing so great about it and it's won't give any lasting pleasure even, soon after you will run after some other pleasure. So if you like then "know thyself" is two words packed summary of the above quotes.

It's only the impregnable attitude and constant efforts that bring you sweet fruits. The above quote clearly says that failure is nothing but only a step to learn and to move ahead towards your goal with more knowledge this time, keep on learning as knowledge is all. You will fall a thousand times but you have to motivate yourself to move ahead no matter what happens. Staying there means that you just go with all that there is thinking it's your fortune and you stop doing anything to make it better. As discussed earlier also that it's just learning everywhere, the universe is a utopian universal university where everyone is enrolled and to graduate, you have to continuously strive for knowledge alone that will set you free from this university. So never give up and never lose heart, the night can never stay forever and the day has to follow. So keep a flame always lighted inside your heart irrespective of any condition that you are in as this attitude only will pave a path for change and your further advancement. So keep trying never give up!!!

It's exactly similar like if you ask me the address of a certain place where you want to go then I could only give you the direction to reach your destination and nothing more is possible. It should be only you that have to follow that path and get to your desired place. Meaning it's always you who has to work on yourself, no one other in the world can perform this task for you with results visible in you except him.Same thing Socrates is trying to convey in his above quote. He can only give you the right thoughts to ponder upon and get to your desired consciousness, but the transformation is completely your responsibility. Right thoughts will give you the right attitude, the right attitude will give you the right conditions & right conditions will give you enduring success.

It's a similar quote to "Love thy neighbor as yourself" which means if you want to love and kindness then you should be the first to invest in it. You will only get whatever you vibrate in equal measures, it's also the saying of the law of attraction. It says that like attracts like, so if you try to hate or deceive someone then you are doing to yourself own self as this is the only thing you will get in return, deception, and hatred. It's the beginning of universal love which is a must for mastery. As when you see everything as yourself then a deep feeling of love comes deep down your heart, and your vision will be quite different than what you are having now. So it teaches us to only have right & pure thoughts in our mind for any transformation to occur & when you will change then all else will automatically change around you.

When you see or feel a different world/dimension then it's obvious for amazement to run over you as this is not the usual way you saw it or felt it. Similarly when you dive deep into mysticism or philosophy then you won't come to know instantly but your mind will be changing gradually every other time. Remember you can say you are the same from your birth till death but there is a constant flux of change in yourself going on each second of your life, you are never the same person at night who has woken up in the morning. The thoughts and feelings throughout the day make you different than at night. So it's all wonder but a wonderful thing to experience. Let yourself be amazed, it's the real excitement in it that will never end, surprises are on your every step. So be amazed and remain confused and do inquiries then you will surely become full of wisdom.
